Many of us would remember heading to Jack’s Place with your parents. I, myself, remember heading to a branch at a quaint corner of Orchard Road with my mother for a luxurious lunch – yes, back then, it was a big deal for a 13 year old to eat a fire steak!

A name filled with history

This is a brand filled with good old memories, and it is no surprise to me when we delved a little into its story. It goes all the way back to 1967, when Mr. Say Lip Hai started as a cook boy for the British Troops, where he learnt the art of a Sunday roast – from roast beef to the pockets of puffed pastries known as Yorkshire Puddings. He took all of that to serve us Singaporeans, as well as the troops in the area, with his first Cola Restaurant and Bar.

Yes, it is not called Jack’s Place – so, where did he ever get this name from? Turns out, a British Housewife tasted his steak, liked it so much that she requested him to start a catering business for her husband’s pub in Killiney Road. His name? Jack Hunt. He took over the kitchen and the success stories tells itself in the numerous stores that have play part in my childhood, and, no doubt, many of our parent’s pak-tor days.

Going back to its Roots

2015 will see the celebration of its 49th Anniversary, and with the SG50 festivities starting to heat up with National Day coming up soon, it seemed only right that this old-school favourite is making a comeback with their heritage in mind.

Jack’s Place essentially started out as a Cola Café, and why not get back into the game with one? Their new Paya Lebar Square branch will not only see a newly revamped concept with retrolicious decorations paying homage to the period and their founder, but will also have an all-new Cola Café next to it for quick bites, coffee, and, importantly, ice cream!

Besides their popular cakes, pastries and pies, they have collaborated with home-grown brands such as the ever-popular ice cream store Udders and Smitten Coffee to give colleagues, friends and families a place to hang out and have a treat. They even have craft beers all the way from the U.K. in-store for you to down your creamy udders creations with!

Its location next to NTUC makes it an obvious stop before heading home, and aspiring cooks can even grab some of Jack’s Place marinate steaks, sauces, craft beers and boutique wines to spice up your dinner.

It is amazing that something so classic has stood the test of time, and managed to stay true to how it was in the beginning. Heading there was like a trip down memory lane, which I could now end with a nostalgic chat over Udders and coffee with my mother – mostly, about how I almost flipped the steak across the room that one time with my tiny kid hands.
