Japan tops the list of culinary destinations based on a Hilton Worldwide survey of some 2,700 leisure travellers from nine countries in Asia Pacific (APAC) including Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. 43% of these respondents allocate up to half of their total holiday budget for food and drink. 90% of them go out of their way to try famous local dishes while 87$ seek out local street food. 79% look for culturally unique food experiences such as culinary festivals and food markets when visiting a destination.
In Singapore 30% of Singaporeans considered food a critical factor when deciding where to visit. 77% of Singapore seek out culinary experiences when they travel while 92% make it a point to try local dishes when they travel. 96% seek out local street food when visiting their destination.
Thailand and Taiwan follow closely after Japan as the favourite culinary destination. Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong share third place position. However 19% of respondent (highest from Indonesia, Australia, Korea, Japan and Malaysia) felt that food experiences in their home country were favoured over other destinations in the region.
Singaporeans voted Taiwan followed by Hong Kong and Japan as their favourite culinary destinations in the Asia Pacific region.
