German airline Lufthansa celebrates 50th anniversary of flying to Singapore which coincides with Singapore celebrating its 50th year of independence. Lufthansa will be introducing the new Premium Economy class on flights between Frankfurt and Singapore from 23 April 2015.

Lufthansa flew its first flight to Singapore on 3 April 1965. Today it operates a daily non stop service between Frankfurt and Singapore on its Airbus A380-800 aircraft. The introduction of the Premium Economy product complements the upgrade initiatives that the airline plans to make in all travel classes this year. Premium Economy cabin is located in the first cabin area on the main deck of the Airbus A380.

Customers also get a welcome drink, a bottle of water and an amenity kit when they board. A dedicated menu is offered and served on porcelain tableware. Enjoy in-flight entertainment with your own touch screen 11 to 12 inch monitor built into the seat in front or you could use the remote control.

The airline intends to upgrade all its 106 long haul aircraft to include the Premium Economy Seats by October this year as part of its EUR1 million investment to improve its premium services on its journey to become a five star airline. Implementation of Premium Economy started with planning in 2012. A total of 3,600 seats were ordered from the manufacturer ZIM. The airline expects 1.5 million passengers annually flying in this class.

Lufthansa feels that there is a market for Premium Economy as more corporates are no longer travelling in Business Class and leisure customers these days need more comfort but were not willing to travel in Business Class.

We tried out the Premium Economy seats which are currently on display in Main Event area in Transit at Changi Airport Terminal 2 next to Orchid Garden. The seat recline on the Premium Economy seats are pretty comfortable and the leg rests offer more comfort with also more leg room.

Premium Economy is on average EUR 300 to 350 more per segment than the fare on Economy Class.

Lufthansa Premium Economy special launch fares in Singapore are available till 20 March 2015 starting from S$1,999 to destinations such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Lisbon, Milan, Paris and more for any Lufthansa flights between Singapore and Europe and within Europe.
