September 2011, Singapore – A music-dance-drama tv series is set to dazzle TV audience across Asia this October with broadcasts in Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and 12 other countries. 

The Kitchen Musical tells a story of Maddie, a rich, young girl fresh from culinary school. Maddie begins a journey of self-discovery following her graduation from a culinary school in Paris. She works in her dad’s restaurant, The Avilon and learns that she cannot always get her way be being Daddy’s girl.

This TV Series is a four-month long original production of The Group Entertainment.  It will spread over 13 one-hour episodes featuring an international cast – British thespian Stephen Rahman-Hughes, Filipino powerhouses Karylle Tatlonghari and Christian Bautista, Hong Kong supermodel Rosemary Vandenbroucke and New York Based, Filipino stage actor, Arthur Acuna.

A first international musical television drama series produced in Singapore for the regional and international markets, The Kitchen Musical will be airing on AXN Asia, MetroTV in Indonesia, nTV7 in Malaysia, and Studio 23 in the Philippines.

The people behind the production include:

Creator and writerCheek has piled up credits with many of the industry’s best-known creative outfits including being a producer for the now-defunct Singapore Broadcasting Corporation and an Executive Vice President at Star TV in Hong Kong.   He was also an integral part of the team that started MTV in Asia.  He earned international praise as the writer and director of Singapore film “Chicken Rice War”.  He received the Young Artist Award from the Singapore National Arts Council in 2001 and bagged the Best Short Film Award twice at the Singapore International Film Festival.

Director of ChoreographyJason Coleman was the choreographer and dance consultant of the feature film “Happy Feet” and is currently a judge on the hit TV Series “So You Think You Can Dance” in Australia.  In 2008, he opened Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance which is currently the largest dance school in Australia.

Musical Director and ArrangerGerard Salonga is a famed conductor, musical arranger, orchestrator and musical director from the Philippines.  He graduated as summa cum laude in the Berklee College of Music and received Berklee’s Contemporary Writing and Production Achievement Award.  He is also the found of Global Studio Orchestra “FILharmoniKA”.

Makeup Consultant Massimiliano Della Maggesa is better known in the fashion circuit as Max the Joker.  Renowned for his versatile nature that made him an esteemed fashion designer, senior make-up artist and creative director, the Milanese has collaborated with the likes of Missoni, Gianni Versace, Alberta Ferretti and the Estee Lauder Group.

Culinary Consultant and ChefBertrand Cheo who began his culinary journey at a precocious age of 14.  He rounded out his training and experience at numerous well-known hotels and restaurants through perseverance and hard work.  He has a F&B company providing consultancy on restaurant start-up, menu planning and kitchen staff training.

The Kitchen Musical is an original production by The Group Entertainment.  You can expect fresh entertainment that will satiate your appetite for flavour-filled story lines spiced with complex characters while singing along to your favourite hit songs and savouring delicious dishes presented in an exciting way.

There are also plans for a musical version of The Kitchen Musical to be staged in the third quarter of 2012 and plans are in the pipe line for an American version to be produced in the US.

Interview at The Kitchen Musical Media Day held at Republic Polytechnic

Republic Polytechnic was where the studio set was situated with involvement from the Technology and Arts Department as well as the Hospitality Department.     The Kitchen Musical allowed staff and students the opportunity to produce the “making of” behind the scenes b-rolls, work on the social media aspect of the drama series as well as hands-on in end-to-end project management.
