Singapore should be more accessible, beyond physical accessibility in terms of transportation and common areas. Pulau Ubin and most Singapore islands are inaccessible to the wheelchair-users community.

That’s exactly what Wheels@Ubin, a community event is trying to raise awareness of. It hopes to accelerate the transformation of our society into an all-inclusive one.

The community event will allow 100 Singaporean wheelchair users to visit Pulau Ubin to celebrate Singapore’s 50th anniversary on 26 June this year. 500 participants including volunteers, caregivers and 100 wheelchair users from Asian Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA), Hand-Cycling Association of Singapore (HAS) and Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) will be expected at the event.  The Singapore Navy will provide sea transportation for all participants to and from Pulau Ubin via the RSN’s Fast Craft departing from the Changi Sailing Club with 30 Navy personnel volunteering onsite at the event. SMRT Taxis will also volunteer the service of 100 taxis to provide land transportation for the wheelchair participants. 30 SMRT Taxi volunteers will be accompanying the beneficiaries on the visit.

Dennis Quek and Wilson Ang are the founders of Wheels@Ubin. They took a trip to Pulau Ubin and realised the charms and beauty of Pulau Ubin was inaccessible to wheelchair-users. After that, they were motivated to spearhead a project to bring them to visit Ubin.

Wheels@Ubin is one of the many projects which has received support from the SG50 Celebration Fund.
