Rendezvous with French Cinema

23 November 2011, Singapore – From 8 to 13 December 2011, the best of contemporary French Cinema will be showcased at the Societe Generale Private Banking 1st Rendezvous With French Cinema. Organised by Unifrance, Institut Français and Alliance Française de Singapour, the film festival aims to promote the latest French films to International and Asian audiences and to offer a business platform for French and regional industry player to network.   More than 20 films will be screened at Golden Village Vivocity, Shaw Theatres Lido, The Cathay Cineplex cinemas as well as the Alliance Française Theatre.

 

Highlights

  • New film releases, some of which will make their Asian premiere in Singapore – these include The Well-Digger’s Daughter (directorial debut of celebrated French actor, Daniel Auteuil), Special Forces (directed by Stéphane Rybojad), Point Blank (directed by Fred Cavayé), A Happy Event (directed by Rémi Bezançon) and Free Men ( directed by Ismaïl Ferroukhi).
  • Partner Asian Television Forum (ATF) to bring to Singapore 12 sales agent companies to France
  • Gala Opening will also officially launch ATF 2011
  • The Artist, a film directed by Michel Hazanavicius will open the festival
  • Carole Bouquet, the leading lady of French Cinema will be leading the delegation of actors and directors coming to Singapore.  She has previously appeared in the 1981 James Bond movie, For Your Eyes Only
  • To date, confirmed members of the delegation also include directors Stéphane Rybojad, Rémi Bezançon, Mathieu Demy, Fred Cavayé, Rithy Panh and Ismaïl Ferroukhi, actor Pio Marmaï from the film, A Happy Event, actress Ludivine Sagnier from the film The Beloved and Astrid Berges-Frisbey from the film, The Well-Digger’s Daughter.   There will be more confirmations expected and you will also get a chance to meet and interact with them during post-screening sessions.

Martin lives in Paris with Claire. Their relationship has hit a dead end. She takes him to his mother’s apartment, in a neighbourhood he used to know well when they lived there together.  Images from his childhood  resurface  and disturb him. Martin can’t face up to his mom’s death and takes off to Tijuana on the trail of Lola, a Mexican woman he used to know, and who held a special place in his mother’s life. Cambodia. The year is 1972. At the height of the Pacific War, a US aircraft crashes into Cambodian mountains. The survivor is immediately taken prisoner by the local villagers. But the guy is Black… For the naïve, mesmerized young child telling this story,  the  man’s  nationality,  race  and  language  don’t  make  him  an  enemy  or  a stranger, but merely an animal that needs to be taken care of. Rithy Panh brings this story  into  his  native  land  -the  little  Cambodian  child  from  the  rice  fields,  who’s responsible  for  guarding  the  prisoner,  is already  sucked  in by  the  Khmer  Rouge ideology. Across the border, in Vietnam, war is raging and US fighters fly over his country to bomb Vietnam. Will the child be able not to kill the black man – the enemy?  Based on the Japanese classic Shiiku (The Catch) by Nobel laureate Oe Kenzaburo.  Gibier d’élevage was presented at L’Atelier du Festival, Cannes Film Festival 2011.

An adaptation of the notorious Gothic novel by Matthew G. Lewis, published in 1796, The Monk tells the tragic tale of Friar Ambrosio, set in 17th century Catholic Spain. Abandoned at birth and left in front of the doors of a Capuchin monastery, Ambrosio is raised  by the friars.  He becomes  a preacher  much  admired  for his fervor  and feared  for  his  uncompromising  character.  He  believes  he  is  sheltered  from  all temptation. The arrival of a mysterious novice undermines his convictions and leads him down the path of sin.

1942, in German-occupied  Paris. Younes, a young unemployed Algerian, earns his living as a black marketeer. Arrested by the French police, Younes agrees to spy on the  Paris  mosque.  The  police  suspects  the  mosque  authorities,  among  whom  Si Kaddour Ben Ghabrit, its Rector, of helping Resistance fighters and Jews by giving them  false  certificates.  At  the  mosque,  Younes  meets  the  Algerian  singer  Salim Halali. Younes is moved by Salim’s beautiful voice and forceful personality and they become friends. Soon after, he discovers that Salim is Jewish. In spite of the risks it entails,  Younes  stops  collaborating  with  the  police.  Confronted  by  the  horrors unfolding  around  him,  Younes  gradually  evolves  from  being  a  politically  ignorant immigrant worker into a fully-fledged freedom fighter.

Les  hommes  libres  has  been  awarded  the  Prix  du  jury  des  Jeunes  at the  2011 French Film Festival in Bienne, Switzerland.

Amicably divorced,  she is flanked by two “badly brought up” adolescents.  Her love life is a desert:  no  time.  As  it  is  necessary  for  the  body  to  rejoice,  she  submits  to  the advances of a client.

Except that the man falls completely in love and attaches himself to her. To get rid of him, she takes on renovation works to make her home a complete disaster. To crown her achievement, she engages a Colombian architect without legal papers, whose situation she helped to straighten out. Indebted to her, he decides to renovate her house completely, with the help from a team of “multi-tasking illegal workers.”  She didn’t ask for that much!
