The AirAsia skinned London Cabs

London, 16 June 2010 –  I sat in the AirAsia cabs from our hotel at Corus Hyde Park to the Lord’s Cricket Ground today for the AirAsia British MotoGP riders pre-race event to be held from 18 to 20 June at Silverstone Circuit.

These young MotoGP riders including current leader Jorge Lorenzo, American Nicky Hayden and AirAsia-Sepang International Circuit’s own homegrown star rider, Muhammad Zulfahmi Khairuddin participated in a very English game of cricket whilst being served tea and crumpets by AirAsia stewardesses.

These riders also shared their expectations for the weekend in Silverstone which is also the debut race of a new and improved circuit, expected to give the fastest ever lap time on the circuit.

AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes was present to support the riders. 2010 is the first of a 3-year title sponsorship of the British MotoGP.

Zulfahmi, affectionately known as Fahmi, who emerged onto the circuit as a wildcard rider at the Shell Advance Malaysian MotoGP in 2009, is now embarking on his debut season in the 125cc category. The remarkably talented 18-year-old expressed hope to finish among the top 15 at Silverstone this weekend.

Fahmi, who is now based in Bologna, hopes to quickly get a feel of the new track and be able to improve his riding and handling of the bike.

At a press conference with Asean media, Fernandes said sponsoring the British MotoGP is part of AirAsia’s long term strategy to build global brand awareness. He added that he would be pleased to see team AirAsia-Sepang International Circuit to finish all races and be the best among the new teams.

“Like AirAsia we started as a baby and we became a world-class airline. I expect the same with our effort in MotoGP ….. This is also a way for us to give back to the community by developing and nurturing Asean talent,” Fernandes mentioned.
