Ah, Space Invaders. The legendary arcade game that ruled my technicoloured childhood. What was an instant phenomenon when it first hit arcades back in 1978 continues to remain an integral part of pop culture. Even a French urban artist has dedicated his work purely to bringing to our reality these 8-bit arcade wonders, and now, with Fred Perry X Space Invaders, we can do the very same with our wardrobe – and look mighty good while doing it.

This year, the brand’s iconic Laurel Wreath is being taken over by aliens, all across the screen – or, more accurately, their Pique Shirt. Quite literally; someone save that laurel wreath!

The nostalgic technicolour is being relived onto each garment, in every sense. Fred Perry keeps it classy with an alien clean up, and a neon update to their trademark twin tipping.

Topping off the canon embroidery on the front is some pixelated detailing on the back in equally contrastingly bright colours. Looks like we got to watch our backs with these pesky aliens.

The Space Invaders T-shirt sports the a Laurel Wreath tape, and looks most adorable, especially as you realise Mr. Alien Crab is trying to make a break with the Y.

Even their outerwear cannot escape the relentless waves of crabs, squid and octopuses. The classic retro funnel neck makes a comeback with an alien sports tape down the arm and, of course, the specially designed embroidery on the back.

A true homage to 80s nostalgia, their Spencer Leather Tennis Shoes comes with self-colour stitching and Space Invaders print on the collar, tongue, laces and, even, the insoles. Still, the Laurel Wreath does not back down and gives the pair a trademark finish in a popping contrast.
The brand has had many collaborations, and they have got the formula right. They keep what’s iconic about themselves, while bringing the artists’ idea across in full blast. This time is no exception. It is a collection for fans of the brand, space invaders or simply someone who wants add a new fresh pop to their usual outfits.
Fred Perry X Space Invaders collection is now available at the Fred Perry store located in Mandarin Gallery #03-08, 333A Orchard Road, Singapore 238867.
