AIG DriveSafe Challenge Promotes Road Safety

AIG DriveSafe Challenge is happening this Saturday 7 September 2013 at The Grandstand at Turf Club Road.  Activities will start from 8.30am where participants and registration begin and the challenge flagged off by Associate Professor Muhammad Faisal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Health & Ministry of Transport and Bernard Tay, Chairman of the Singapore Road Safety Council.

The event aims to remind people to drive safely on the roads and to help break bad driving habits.  Last year, there were 327,503 cases of  road safety violations in Singapore  which is 3.6% more than the year before.  AIG will also donate all the funds raised from the registration fees of the AIG DriveSafe Challenge to the Singapore Road Safety Council.

If you have not registered for the challenge, registrations close today.  There is a carnival at the GrandStand from 11.30am to 2.30pm.  There will be performances by Kiddiwinkie and Magicfiddler. You can expect lots of fun and it is a great way to spend with the Saturday morning with some family fun.

Statistics for Thought

  • 152,845 Cases reported in 2012 compared to 157,471 in 2011 (a 3% reduction).  However accidents involving personal injuries increased over the last 5 years averaging about an 11% increase annually (Source: General Insurance Association)
  • Common causes of accidents: tailgating, speeding, use of handphone while driving, failure to signal switching of lanes (Source: General Insurance Association)
  • Young drivers are the highest risk on the roads with personal injury accidents reported involving young drivers below 25 years remaining high.
  • Claims received by AIG involving cyclists have doubled from 2010 to 2012.  In the first half of 2013, cyclist-related motor accidents exceeded the total for 2012 by 30%
