This stay, from 2 to 5 May 2025, was hosted by JATI Koh Russey. All opinions and editorial content remain entirely our own.
Design and Atmosphere: Refined Simplicity

Opened on 1 April 2025, JATI Koh Russey was the last project of the late architect Jaya Ibrahim, whose signature blend of cultural elegance and spatial harmony shines throughout the property. The resort’s architecture draws on traditional Cambodian aesthetics with a contemporary twist, featuring clean lines, timber detailing, and open-air pavilions that seamlessly blend into the landscape.
It’s peaceful here. No background music, no pool parties. Just the sound of waves, rustling palms, and the occasional gecko chirp.
Getting There: A Journey Worth the Effort

Reaching Jati Koh Russey takes a bit of coordination, but that’s part of the appeal. You can fly into Sihanoukville Airport or take the resort’s private transport from Phnom Penh which takes some two hours. From Ream Pier, it’s a breezy 10-minute boat transfer across calm waters from the Mainland JATI Pavilion. The moment you step off the boat, you and your baggage are sent to your villa on a buggy.
The resort runs four daily boat transfers in each direction. From the Mainland Pavilion to JATI Koh Russey, departures are at 10am, 12.30pm, 2pm, and 5.30pm. Return trips from the island back to the mainland leave at 8am, 11am, 1.30pm, and 4pm.
Your Villa, Your Bubble of Island Bliss at JATI Koh Russey

The 82 one- or two-bedroom villas are scattered across jungle and beachfront locations, designed to maximise privacy. Oceanfront Villas feature direct beach access and stunning sunrise views, while Jungle Villas are surrounded by lush greenery.
Expect king-size or double beds, spacious showers, and generous verandas with daybeds. Villas come with their own plunge pools. For those who prefer to stay dry, opt for one of the Garden Pavilions. There’s a quiet luxury in the details: natural textiles, polished stone floors, ceiling fans over air-con.

The 104 sqm Ocean View Pool Villa (Villa # 107) we stayed in was a stunning blend of natural textures and understated luxury, designed for those who value both privacy and connection to nature. Inside, the villa showcases refined Cambodian craftsmanship with woven ceiling panels, rattan light fixtures, and handwoven accents that lend warmth to the minimalist architecture. The brightly coloured cushions scattered across the villa add a cheerful pop of personality, instantly livening up the otherwise calming, earthy palette. Sliding glass doors open onto a private terrace with bright yellow loungers, a personal plunge pool, and uninterrupted views of the sea, ideal for quiet moments or lazy afternoons.
The bedroom is a cocoon of comfort, featuring a king-size bed adorned with locally inspired textiles and plush pillows. A separate lounge area with vibrant décor offers space to unwind.
Our villa’s location couldn’t have been more convenient. Set along the beach, right next to the Beach Club and shared pool, and just a leisurely walk from Arun Restaurant, the Bamboo Spa, and the gym. It made slipping between meals, massages, and moments of rest delightfully effortless. The only trade-off? It can get a little lively at times when fellow guests and their little ones pass by in high spirits.

The spacious bathroom boasts a long stone vanity, walk-in rain shower, and lush garden views through floor-to-ceiling glass. Tucked behind a glass wall that opens up to a lush, steamy jungle scene, this shower at JATI Koh Russey feels deliciously voyeuristic in the best possible way. It’s just you, warm water cascading from a rainfall showerhead, and a wild tangle of tropical greenery watching silently from the other side. There’s something undeniably seductive about rinsing off in this semi-exhibitionist space, nature on full display, and you, gloriously bare, basking in the freedom of it all.

The bath amenities are a whole vibe. Think island botanicals meets art-school chic. Each bottle is dressed in a riot of colours and tropical patterns that could double as modern art. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, and lotion all come in these cheerful, chunky pump bottles that instantly lift the mood and brighten up the stone-and-bamboo bathroom aesthetic. They’re not just pretty faces either. Everything smells fresh, feels luxe, and adds a little “spa day” flair to your morning rinse.

Even the wardrobe at 1 Koh Russey gets a design upgrade. Located conveniently within the open-plan bathroom, it’s a sleek blend of bamboo and clean lines. Part storage, part statement piece. There’s ample space for hanging clothes, stashing beachwear, or lining up your sandals like a minimalist fashion display. Robes, umbrellas, and thoughtfully folded pool towels are all neatly arranged and ready to go. It’s the kind of wardrobe that makes unpacking feel like part of the holiday ritual, not a chore.

The in-room amenities are anything but basic. The minibar is stocked with local delights like Angkor beer and La Plantation snacks. There’s a stash of Harney & Sons teas and a coffee pod machine to calm your soul (or justify that second nap), and a jar of homemade cookies for when you can’t quite wait for dinner.
Need a vibe? A stylish Bose speaker sits ready to soundtrack your pool dips or sunset laze. And yes, you’ll find all the tech essentials, from universal power outlets to lighting switches clearly labelled with moon and lamp icons, so you’re not playing light-switch roulette at 2am. Luckily, the cleverly positioned night lights act like a soft-lit runway, helping you navigate those half-asleep trips to the bathroom without stubbing your toes or crashing into furniture.
What is there to do at JATI Koh Russey

While JATI is perfect for doing absolutely nothing, there are plenty of low-impact activities. Kayaks and paddleboards are complimentary. You can snorkel right off the beach, join a guided jungle walk, or book a spa treatment in a serene pavilion overlooking the sea. Or borrow a bicycle and explore the resort.

JATI Koh Russey offers a thoughtfully curated schedule of daily activities that rotate monthly, giving returning guests something new to look forward to each time. From the serenity of sunrise yoga to the meditative pace of Hatha Yoga or the more energising Flow & Glow Yoga, the wellness offerings are diverse and inclusive for all levels.
For those who prefer a splash of adventure, the Ocean Explorer Snorkelling session invites guests to discover the vibrant marine life just offshore. If staying active on land is more your thing, beach volleyball is a popular option, bringing together sun, sand, and a bit of friendly competition.
These activities are complimentary and open to all guests, creating opportunities to connect with others or simply enjoy a new experience during your stay. Whether you’re looking to unwind, get moving, or explore the island’s natural beauty, the resort’s rotating activity programme offers a little something for every kind of traveller.
Tennis and Pickle Ball

The Racquet and Sports Club at JATI Koh Russey is surprisingly well-equipped for a remote island resort. Whether you’re into pickleball, badminton, tennis, or a casual game of basketball, the courts here are in excellent condition and ready for action. Weather permitting, of course. All necessary equipment, including rackets and balls, is available for loan, so there’s no need to pack your own. From above, the drone view gives you a great sense of its layout, tucked neatly behind the Bamboo Spa and the gym. It’s a quiet, tree-fringed area that blends athletic energy with island calm. And just beside it, there’s a vacant patch of land being prepped for a future addition. A mini golf course will eventually bring another layer of relaxed fun to the resort’s offerings.Whether you’re staying active between spa treatments or just want to hit a few balls before breakfast, the sports facilities here are more than just a side note. They’re a genuine perk.
Swim and Tan

Cambodia’s intense tropical heat makes the resort’s pools an essential part of the island experience, especially if you prefer a more comfortable, shaded place to cool off. The main shared pool, conveniently positioned between the Bamboo Spa, the gym, and the Beach Club, is a standout feature. With its clean lines and serene surroundings, it invites you in for a dip any time of day.
Fringed by sun loungers and sheltered by trees, the poolside area offers uninterrupted views of the beach and the sea just beyond. It’s an ideal spot for lounging with a book, enjoying a drink, or simply soaking up the coastal atmosphere without braving the open waves.

If you’re staying in a villa that comes with its own private plunge pool, you’ll have the added luxury of slipping into the water whenever you like, away from the shared spaces. It’s perfect for those moments when you want complete privacy and stillness. Just you, the water, and the gentle hum of island life.
Bamboo Spa & Gym

For deep relaxation and to ease away any lingering tension, make your way to Bamboo Spa. Its treatments follow three distinctive pathways – leaves, roots, and earth, each designed to engage the senses in a unique way. Exploring these different Kher-inspired massage, body and face treatments, manicures and pedicures might just be the most rewarding part of your stay.

The 90-minute Signature Bamboo Qi massage (USD85) is anything but ordinary. Warm bamboo sticks freshly steamed and looking suspiciously like they belong in a fancy dim sum basket are rolled expertly over your aching muscles. Each stick is infused with the essential oils of native herbs, roots, and shoots, so you’re not just getting kneaded, you’re getting steeped in the goodness of Cambodia’s ancient healing traditions.
The treatment begins with a sensory welcome. Handpicked botanicals like kaffir lime, turmeric, and lemongrass are presented to awaken your senses. Then comes the magic. A full-body ritual using herb-infused oils, rhythmic bamboo rolling, and precise pressure that hits all the right spots. The heat from the bamboo helps loosen up tension and the lingering aroma from the herbal oils makes you feel like you’re marinating in a five-star jungle retreat.
Bonus? Post-treatment, you’re served herbal tea and little bites made in-house. The whole experience whispers “self-care” with a local accent and a luxurious echo.
Gym and Yoga

The gym at Bamboo Spa and Gym in JATI Koh Russey is a surprisingly well-appointed space, thoughtfully designed to make workouts both energising and serene. Filled with natural light and surrounded by lush greenery visible through floor-to-ceiling windows, the space feels more like a tranquil wellness studio than a traditional fitness centre. The equipment is modern and comprehensive, with Life Fitness cardio machines including treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes, alongside a selection of free weights and strength-training gear.
Whether you’re sticking to your daily routine or just sneaking in a quick sweat before a beach dip, the gym offers a calm, air-conditioned retreat for movement and mindfulness amid nature.

The cosy yoga studio offers a calming environment, gently illuminated by morning light and framed by lush tropical foliage just beyond its windows. With warm wooden floors and a clean, uncluttered design, the space feels both grounding and serene, an ideal setting for sunrise sessions, breathwork, or mindful stretching. It’s a peaceful retreat that encourages you to slow down, tune into your body, and move in sync with the rhythm of island life.
Sunrise Yoga at JATI Koh Russey

Waking up at 5.30am for a sunrise yoga session was a first for me, and definitely out of my comfort zone. Flexibility isn’t my strong suit. My body usually feels like it’s made of stiff bamboo rather than fluid muscle. How apt, being in Bamboo Island. But we went ahead with it anyway, and I’m glad we did. The session was arranged specifically for us, although JATI Koh Russey occasionally offers it to other guests, depending on schedules and availability.
If you’re lucky, you’ll get to stretch and breathe through your practice as the sky shifts from inky blue to soft amber. And when your eyes aren’t closed in downward dog or child’s pose, you’ll be treated to one of the most beautiful sunrises you’ll ever witness. It’s a calm, grounding way to begin the day. Honestly, not a bad trade for a bit of lost sleep.
Canoeing, Snorkelling and other beach activities

Life on the island isn’t just about lounging, though there’s plenty of that too. Guests can jump straight into the action with sea sports like canoeing, paddleboarding, snorkelling, and classic beach fun right at their doorstep.
And for the little ones? The upcoming Seahorse Kids Club promises big adventures in a pint-sized package, with beach games and island escapades to keep young explorers entertained. Meanwhile, parents can kick back guilt-free, knowing there’s qualified babysitting on hand. Perfect for sneaking in a spa session or a peaceful cocktail with a view.
Or Just Do Nothing

Sometimes the best part of a holiday is doing absolutely nothing. And at JATI Koh Russey, that’s a luxury in itself. Whether you’re curled up in bed beneath handwoven art pieces or stretched out on a daybed with the sea breeze drifting in, every moment feels like permission to slow down. Here, rest isn’t just encouraged. It’s part of the island rhythm. Wake up late, nap often, and let the softness of the sheets and stillness of the surroundings recharge you completely.
Wake up for the Sunrise

Waking up early is more reward than a chore. As the first light spills over the horizon, the sky turns into a masterpiece of golds, pinks, and soft blues, casting a magical glow across the island and its quiet shoreline. It’s the kind of sunrise that gently demands your attention, making every sleepy yawn or early alarm call completely worth it. Whether you’re greeting the day on the beach, from your private villa deck, or during a sunrise yoga session, this moment of stillness and beauty is a quiet highlight of island life you won’t want to miss.
Dining here

Dining at JATI is an unhurried affair. Meals are included, with a focus on locally sourced produce and seafood. The kitchen showcases Khmer dishes alongside Western options. Don’t miss the amok or the grilled catch of the day.
Executive Chef Sok Puthea brings thoughtful finesse and local soul to the kitchen at JATI Koh Russey, crafting dishes that balance refined technique with bold, honest flavours. His island menus reflect both international polish and a deep respect for Cambodian ingredients.
You can dine at the main restaurant, have a private meal on the beach, or even request in-villa dining. The wine list leans towards French and Australian labels, and the cocktail game is quietly strong. HMD Asia brings over two of their Phnom Penh concepts to the island – KoKo Steakhouse at TRIBE Phnom Penh Post Office Square and Le Manolis winebar.
Breakfast at Arun Restaurant

Breakfast is served from 7am to 10.30am at Arun Restaurant, just steps from the jetty, with a buffet spread featuring both international and Khmer dishes. As early risers who enjoy the stunning sunrise views, we found the breakfast setting blissfully quiet, perfect for a peaceful, slow start to the day. On quieter weekdays, an ala carte menu replaces the buffet spread.

You can order eggs cooked to your preference from the menu, or help yourself to a buffet selection that includes pastries, bacon, sausages, congee, tropical fruits, and more. There’s a spread of healthier choices such as oats, chai pudding, yogurts or cereal with fresh milk.

With an all-you-can-eat setup, you’re free to choose your own path, whether that’s keeping things light and clean or indulging to your heart’s content. We were especially pleased to find comforting Asian dishes on offer, which made each meal feel satisfyingly familiar yet relaxed.

Despite having breakfast here for three consecutive mornings, we never grew tired of it. The variety was enough to keep things interesting. Each day offered something slightly different, whether it was a new Khmer dish to try or a fresh pastry just out of the oven. The combination of à la carte options and buffet staples made every morning feel just a bit special.
Beach Club – Where you have Lunch and Dinner

The Beach Club at JATI Koh Russey strikes a sweet balance between barefoot island ease and thoughtful culinary flair. It’s the kind of place where you can stroll in straight from the beach with salty hair and sandy toes, yet still be met with a menu that surprises you in the best way.
By day, the kitchen keeps things relaxed with an all-day dining menu that includes hearty crowd-pleasers like burgers stacked with grass-fed beef, crispy prawn tempura, and soul-warming bowls of seafood laksa.

Craving pizza? They roll out the dough and fire it up fresh for every order, so it lands on your table hot, crisp, and straight from the oven.

But come evening, things get a little more fired up—literally. The spotlight shifts to the Night BBQ Seafood menu, where slipper lobsters, reef fish, and baby cuttlefish hit the grill, dressed up in fragrant Khmer spices and herbaceous sauces. You can choose your fish steamed or charcoal-grilled, and pair it with sauces like spicy mango salsa or green peppercorn butter for a bit of theatre on the table.
Whether you’re tucking into a crispy spring roll with a cold drink or gathering with friends for a sunset seafood feast, the Beach Club feels like a low-key celebration of everything that makes island dining so charming—unfussy, flavourful, and impossibly easy to love.
Steaks at KoKo Steakhouse

This Bamboo Island outpost of KoKo Steakhouse serves up high-quality steak, wine, and a variety of dishes on the spot. From the first crunch of grilled sourdough with roasted garlic and paprika butter, it was clear the kitchen wasn’t here to play safe.

The menu moves confidently from rich Slipper lobster bisque to juicy grilled prawns, flavour-packed wagyu with foie gras, crispy garlic and chives on Japanese fried rice, and tender filet mignon with chunky triple-cooked fries. One standout? A luxe starter of A5 Wagyu Beef Tartare with Unagi, Foie Gras on toast, topped with caviar that deserved its own standing ovation.

The space blends urban bistro vibes with rustic brick walls, moody lighting, and just the right touch of island irreverence. It’s a carnivore’s retreat with just enough polish, and a good glass of red doesn’t hurt either. Outdoor seating is also available, perfect for a cool evening.
Le Manolis Wine Bar

Le Manolis at JATI Koh Russey brings an island spin to Phnom Penh’s beloved bistro and wine bar. Tucked discreetly inside KoKo Steakhouse, this cellar-style nook is a treasure trove for oenophiles who prefer their vino with a side of sea breeze. While its Phnom Penh counterpart leans urban-chic and buzzy, the Koh Russey outpost feels more like a private tasting room marooned in paradise that is quiet, intimate, and wonderfully indulgent.
The selection, though not sprawling, is clearly curated with care. Think Bordeaux, Burgundy, Stellenbosch whites, and crowd-pleasers like Chablis and Merlot, many scrawled with handwritten prices, giving it a charming, backroom cellar vibe. Prices are surprisingly fair, especially for a private island resort. Most bottles are served whole, perfect for unwinding over dinner, or better yet, on your villa deck under a starlit sky.
There are few wines-by-the-glass here, but that’s part of the charm. You’re invited to commit, to indulge, to let the bottle breathe with your evening. Whether you’re sipping a William Fevre Chablis 2023 before a steak, or toasting to sunset with a bottle of Château Le Gay, Le Manolis whispers sophistication without the snobbery.
Private Dining on the beach

Dining barefoot on the sands of JATI Koh Russey feels like stepping into your own private food fantasy. Beneath a dreamy canopy of fairy lights, the beach transforms into your open-air dining room. You’re served a beautifully crafted set menu, dish after dish arriving like little edible love letters from the kitchen, elegant, flavourful, and impossibly fresh. The ocean hums just a few metres away, the breeze adds its own seasoning, and every bite feels a little more indulgent when enjoyed with your toes in the sand.

You can book this exclusive private dining experience along the beach, but do note, it comes with a side of unintentional stardom. The setup sits charmingly between the shoreline and the Beach Club, so while you’re soaking in the romance, diners nearby might just be soaking in the view of you. It’s half candlelit dinner, half live exhibit. But hey, if you’re going to be on display, might as well do it with a wine glass in hand and grilled tiger prawns on your plate.
Lasting Impressions from an Island Escape

“We’re excited to debut HMD Asia’s first beach resort. Anthony Lark, HMD Asia Executive Director
