Sake may be the first beverage to come to mind when thinking of Japan, but (surprise, surprise) a refreshing pint of beer has taken the throne of “most popular”. While mainstream breweries, such as Asahi and Kirin, are ubiquitous in Singapore, Japan’s craft beer scene has been getting tons of attention as well. Hitachino Nest beers and Yona Yona ales can now be found in supermarkets and yakitori joints (say, Ji-Biru), paving the way for more microbreweries to make their mark on our sunny shores. This August, Japan’s most famous Sankt Gallen join their ranks and serves up quality pints, fresh from the tank at Craft Beer Takumi.

Located on the main lobby of Mandarin Orchard Singapore (5th floor), the cosy corner of Craft Beer Takumi beckons all with their 6 glistening taps. Currently, they are serving up the best of what Sankt Gallen has to offer, and what the world immediately thinks of upon the mention of its name – 2011 and 2013’s “World Best IPA” Yokohama XPA. This American styled IPA continues to win recognition globally and within Takumi, and starts the ball rolling on their other brews; Pineapple Ale, Shonan Gold Orange Ale, Pale Ale and Golden Ale.

To fully enjoy this American-styled IPA, it should be served in a Spiegelau’s IPA glass. The narrower bottom enhances the taste and mouth-feel of the aromatic, citrusy hop (think orange zest) profile of the Yokohama XPA, while the wider mouth preserves that creamy, frothy head. It starts off with a fruit-like sweetness, and resolves with a light bitterness.

Pineapple Ale, 5.0%

Looking beautifully inviting in a golden hue with a thick, white forth on top, you get a whiff of pineapple lingering off the top. The body dances delicately between notes of honey and “Golden Pine” pineapples, making it a balanced fruit beer to start the night off.

Read: Sankt Gallen has amazing brews, but this falls a little short (especially after a pint of Yokohama XPA).

Shonan Gold Orange Ale, 5.0%

Sankt Gallen summer special; Shonan Gold Orange Ale, 5.0%.
Sankt Gallen summer special; Shonan Gold Orange Ale, 5.0%.

Nothing says summer more than this nice, crisp fruit beer. Brewed using Kanagawa’s Shonan Gold oranges, this golden beauty welcomes you with an orange marmalade-like aroma as soon as you are served. It is a fun, tropical pint that fans of fruits beers will adore.

Read: Comparing between the pineapple and the orange ale, I would immediately go for the latter. While I am not a fan of fruit beers, it was a fresh and powerful pint.

Pineapple Ale and Shonan Gold Orange Ale are served on a limited basis.
