Review: Altec Lansing Octane 7 (VS4621) 2.1 Speaker System

11 July 2010, Singapore – Just received the review set on Friday, the Octane 7 (VS4621) 2.1 Speaker System is the latest member of Altec Lansing‘s computer speaker line which is also able to connect to CD, DVD and MP3 players.   The Octane 7 replaces the popular VS4121 series.    This new system is tuned for music, movies and gaming sound with a powerful subwoofer, down-firing 3″ mid range and dual 1″ micro-drivers.   I was getting used to the built in speakers of my MacBook till I tested the Octane 7.

The 2 tower-like speakers have a down-firing 3″ mid range speaker at the bottom which blast the sound waves down onto a hard surface, where they are reflected and evenly distributed throughout the room for well balanced sound.

Altec Lansing Octane 7 – Down Firing 3″ Mid-range

I am a strong bass person and I give two thumbs up to the 6 1/2 ” Altec Lansing custom-designed subwoofer.  With manual control over the treble and bass, I could control the amount of base as I blasted Giacomo Puccini‘s La Boheme.  With Jose Carreras as Rodolfo and Barbara Hendricks as Mimi performing, I selected the famous Act 2: Quando Me’n Vo Soletta.  The sound was crisp and the bass from the orchestra complimented it. I liked what I heard from a $100+ product.

I stress tested the set by putting my MacBook and speakers to maximum volume which did not sit too well.

The set-up was really simple.  So if you’re not a techie, do not fret.   I mean there were only 3 things you need to plug in, how wrong can you be. I spent more time removing all the plastic that was wrapping the new set from the box.

Features:

  • Full, accurate sound – 2 1″ micro-drivers and a down-firing 3″ mid-range in each speaker deliver clear, full spectrum sound

  • Bold contemporary design to take up minimal space and increase sound dispersion
  • Audio Alignment – Drivers, enclosure and electronics are balanced for optimum sound

  • Aux in Jack for MP3 players and second device connection, including CD and DVD players

I just bought this lil thing yesterday. I had done a test check in the expo, from where I bought it, it was really noisy, so I took a risk of buying it…. and guess what it paid off.. and paid off really well….. I am happy I took this decision of buying this thing… it looks tiny… bt man… when I play Akon or Greenday… it doesn’t seem tiny any more….. its best for ppl who like to balance their sound with treble and bass… I am loving it, even after I came to know, that it is being sold for $129, in reail, they were claiming it to be 149$ in Expo exhibition…. bt u knw what… after using this… I feel its worth it…. Guys a 4.5 out of 5 Stars to this product…..
