The Volvo EX30 is the kind of electric SUV that makes more sense once you spend time in the driver’s seat. On paper, it is Volvo’s compact fully electric SUV. But I would not say its size is the main reason to like it. In fact, the rear passenger space is one area where you do feel the compact proportions, especially if taller passengers are seated at the back.
Where the EX30 works better is up front. The driver and front passenger get a comfortable, calm, and well-thought-out cabin. The drive is smooth and stable. The sound system is excellent. The boot is more practical than expected. And the whole car has that clean Scandinavian personality that makes it feel modern.
This is not the SUV I would pick if rear seat space is the top priority. But as an electric cruiser for solo drivers, couples or those who spend most of their time in the front seats, the EX30 has plenty going for it.

The Front Cabin Is Where The EX30 Shines

The best place to enjoy the EX30 is from the front.
The driver and front passenger space feels comfortable, with enough room to settle in properly. The seating height is also just right. You do not have to climb in, and you do not have to sink down into the car either. You simply get in and out quite naturally.
That makes it easy to live with, especially for those with weaker knees or less leg strength.
The door armrests for both the driver and front passenger are also a small but appreciated comfort detail. Not every feature needs to shout for attention. Some just make the drive more pleasant, and this is one of them.
Rear Space Is The Compromise
Let’s be honest. The back seats are not the strongest part of the EX30. For shorter trips, children or smaller passengers, the rear seats should be manageable. But taller passengers may find the space tight, especially over longer distances.
That is why I would not position the EX30 as a space-first family SUV. It feels more like a stylish and comfortable electric SUV for those who prioritise the driving experience, front cabin comfort and everyday practicality. If you often ferry tall adults to the back, have them try the rear seats before making a decision.
A Dashboard That Lets The Cabin Breathe
One thing I really liked was the dashboard. It is unblocked, clean and streamlined. There is no visual clutter. No excessive buttons. No unnecessary drama. The cabin has that minimalist Scandinavian look, but it does not feel empty. It feels edited and intentional.

What I also appreciated were the little design details that you may not notice immediately, but make the cabin feel more premium over time. The door handle, for example, is beautifully slim and understated. Set against the textured door panel, it looks clean, sleek and almost furniture-like. Nothing feels overdesigned.

The air-con adjustment lever follows the same idea. It is small, discreet and tactile, avoiding the usual bulky controls you find in many cars. Very Scandinavian, very minimalist, and very much in keeping with the EX30’s calm interior.
The use of recycled and renewable materials gives the interior a more modern feel, while the non-leather interior options suit the fully electric character of the car. Understated, but still interesting.

The panoramic roof also makes a big difference. It gives the interior a more open and spacious feel, which helps balance the compact nature of the car. From the front seats, the cabin feels bright, airy and relaxing.
Effortless EV Power

The EX30 is a proper cruiser. It builds speed so smoothly that you may not realise how fast you are going until you look at the speedometer. There is no loud engine note, no sense of strain and no unnecessary drama. It just moves. That effortless electric acceleration is one of the more enjoyable parts of the drive.
What I also liked was how stable the car felt. It stays composed, especially on expressways, and gives you that calm, reassuring feeling behind the wheel. It is quick when you need it to be, but the overall character remains controlled.
That suits the EX30 very well.
Safety Features That Feel Useful

Volvo’s safety reputation naturally comes with expectations, and the EX30 brings in features that are practical for everyday driving. The collision avoidance systems are reassuring in urban traffic. The driver alert system, which uses an infrared sensor on the steering area to detect distracted or drowsy driving, is also a useful feature to have.
The 360-degree camera is another one I appreciated. In Singapore carparks, this is not just a nice-to-have feature. It helps reduce stress when parking in tighter spaces or navigating awkward corners.
These systems do not feel gimmicky, but add to the sense that the car is designed to make driving calmer and safer.
Clever Storage For Daily Use

The driver storage space is well thought out. The compartment between the driver and front passenger seat opens up nicely, allowing taller bags to fit without obstructing the front cabin. That is useful when you are carrying a work bag, camera gear, shopping or whatever barang barang life throws at you.

The boot space also surprised me. It is big and flexible enough for daily use, airport runs or short trips. A medium-sized check-in luggage and a cabin bag fit nicely, with some additional space left. There is also adjustable space and a hidden compartment, which is handy for keeping more valuable items away from prying eyes. For a car with compact proportions, the EX30 makes good use of its boot.
The Harman Kardon Sound System Is A Real Highlight

One of my favourite features in the EX30 is the Harman Kardon sound system. The soundbar, surround sound and subwoofer deliver a well-rounded music experience with a satisfying bass. It fills the cabin nicely and makes every drive feel more enjoyable.I liked this a lot.
It also fits nicely with the cabin design. The interior stays clean and minimalist, but the audio experience still feels full and immersive.

What Could Be Better
The rear passenger space could be more generous. That is the key compromise for me. If the EX30 had more room at the back, it would feel more complete as a small family SUV. As it is, the rear seats are better suited for shorter journeys, children or smaller passengers.
So the EX30 is not a car I would recommend purely for rear seat comfort.
But if you are mostly driving solo, with a front passenger, or using the rear seats occasionally, then the overall package becomes much easier to appreciate.
Final Thoughts

The Volvo EX30 is not perfect, but it has a clear personality. It is calm, stylish and very easy to enjoy from the front seats. The drive is smooth and stable, the dashboard is beautifully clean, the panoramic roof opens up the cabin, and the Harman Kardon sound system is one of the features I enjoyed most.
The rear-seat space is the main trade-off, and it should be considered if you regularly carry taller passengers. But as an electric cruiser with a comfortable front cabin, practical boot, useful safety tech and a strong sense of Scandinavian design, the EX30 has a lot of appeal.
It feels like a car for people who want something modern, composed and easy to live with.
