Carbon Copy Challenge is Temasek Shophouse’s latest social media movement to inspire the public to collectively reduce carbon footprint by taking small steps to reduce our carbon emissions and copying one simple at a time. Temasek Shophouse’s focus on the topic of sustainability for April. It hopes to generate conversations on building a sustainable community.

Carbon emissions have fallen dramatically due to travel restrictions, scientists caution that this has only marginally slowed the overall rise in carbon dioxide concentrations. The annual mean temperature in Singapore has risen through the years. 2020 was the eighth warmest year on record. It is a worrying trend for low-lying islands. Rising sea levels, more extreme weather, signals an urgent need for us to re-evaluate our carbon footprint. Singapore accounts for 0.11% of global emissions. Singapore is 27th out of 142 countries that produces almost double the global average based on carbon emissions per capita. The Singapore government and industries are working towards a more sustainable future through the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

The social media campaign kicks-off with the ‘Carbon Offset Starter Pack’. It illustrates steps one can take to reduce carbon footprint in the fields of “Food, Fashion, Lifestyle and Home”. The chain will then commence with various kickstarters sharing their action taken to reduce their carbon footprint on Instagram. They will challenge their followers to do the same and tag 3 friends to “carbon copy” them. Individuals and organisations can continue the chain by repeating the same steps. Reducing carbon footprint can include dining sustainably, buying pre-loved goods or unplugging unused appliances. Participants also stand a chance to win vouchers from the participating kickstarters.

Foodscape Collective is a group of like-minded individuals whose aims are to create a fair and circular food system for all. Since their inception in 2016, the ground-up initiative has been activating the shift towards hyperlocal regenerative communities, with small-scale biodiverse edible farms at the heart of each neighbourhood. These farms aim to close the food loop through community composting of organic materials. Foodscape Collective is one of the kickstarters.
