Whether it’s a work day or weekend, most of us have to stay home as much as possible. Not everyone will have the abundance of personal space to do their work or to have some private entertainment time. Competitively priced at S$498, the compact HUAWEI MatePad with 2K FullView Display might be that all-in-one device for that. Scroll down to see the launch promo with S$180 worth of freebies.
NO GMS NO PROBLEM
Yup. With HUAWEI devices, you cannot help but to say NO GOOGLE MOBILE SERVICES (GMS) leh. How to use? Well, thousands of people in Singapore are currently using HUAWEI smart devices without GMS and they are fine with it. That’s because Huawei have been building up their app stores and now you can find essential local apps like GRAB, TraceTogether, SingPass and local Bank apps in their HUAWEI AppGallery app store. For apps that you cannot find in the app store, there will be Petal Search App on the device to help you get the apps installed via reliable sources. With those two apps, majority of your essential apps will be covered. And if not, Petal Search will prompt you with an equivalent app or webpage to replaced those that you are used to.
If all else fails, there’s always the SINGAPORE HUAWEI USER community group on Facebook to help you out. Just make a post on that group page and help will be on your way, by HUAWEI Users themselves. And we cannot wait for the launch of HarmonyOS by Huawei later this year. It’s that long awaited third Operating System we need to keep the market in balance.
It’s an Entertainment BEAST
Built-in with 4GB RAM and 128GB of stoage with exapndable micro SD Card slot, you can download your favourite series and watch on-the-go. The 10.4″ 2K FullView Display on the new MatePad makes viewing your favourite AVENGERS movies on Disney+ mor immersive. Yes, you can download and install Netflix, Viu, iQiYi and Disney+ app by using the Petal Search app. A good screen have to be accompanied by good audio. Huawei got that covered.
The HUAWEI MatePad will come with powerful inbuilt Harman Kardon quad-speaker sound system, which is optimised at the chipset level to support multi-channel sound output. That’s quite neat considering this tablet is priced under S$500. To achieve even greater audio clarity and immersive experience, the tablet is also fitted with the new HUAWEI Histen 6.1 which features an equaliser and a bass booster to deliver 3D spatial sounds.
The size and weight of the tablet is just right for me to hold it comfortably with one hand. Yet it has a nice and wide screen. I had a mini cinematic experience when watching Avengers Endgame on the tablet. And if you have Wi-Fi 6 router at home, the MatePad will be able to stream high resolution video with blazing fast speed too.
Always Ready To WFH
Equipped with the 7nm Kirin 820 processor, the HUAWEI MatePad can take on multi window tasking and comes with smooth performance for your work applications. It’s lightweight at only 460grams and comes with a compact profile for you to easily squeeze out a space on a messy desk for your Zoom calls.
If you managed to get the Smart Keyboard for the MatePad, typing will be a breeze as the keyboard is very tactile and it feels just like the ones from your regular laptop. But it is quite expensive at S$148, and it does not draw power from the tablet. The keyboard will need to be charged separately. That’s quite a bummer.
Comfort For Your Eyes
The MatePad display comes with TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light certification. It minimise exposure to harmful blue light for extended hours of usage. And to make reading documents and ebooks more comfortable, the MatePad also comes with eBook Mode to turn the screen tones to black & white, mimicking and e Ink screen like the kindle for easy reading. This mode can be activate for all apps and you can activate it over the swipe down control panel.
Child Friendly Zone
Huawei have included the Kids Corner app which makes it easy for you to double the device for your toddlers. Once this app is activated, your child can only access apps preloaded by you. And your child cannot exit the app without your passcode. The app will also comes with Posture Alerts to remind your child to sit up when they try to use the tablet lying down. Or remind the kid to stop using the tablet during a bumpy car ride. You will also be able to set daily usage limit, length per session and rest times to better control your child’s usage and routine.
M Pencil Support
For those who likes to scribble, the MatePad will come with M Pencil support. Unlike the MatePad Pro, it will require an adaptor to charge and for initial pairing of the M Pencil to the tablet. And one charge can give you up to 10 hours of continuous usage. It’s a nice and ergonomic stylus for taking notes.
But if you think this pencil is comparable with Apple Pencil for the iPad then you will be disappointed. Of all the stylus I’ve tried all these years, Apple Pencil is still the king for tablet stylus. The sensitivity and flow is still top notch. It’s still the only stylus that makes you think that you are writing with a regular pencil or pen. You can shade like a pencil when you hold it at 30 degrees. the thickness will change according to the angle. That’s Apple Pencil for you. So cannot compare.
