I’ve been a fan of Xiaomi’s Ultra series since the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. Today, Xiaomi has raised the stakes in flagship mobile photography with the Singapore debut of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra and the Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi. Built on a newly elevated strategic co-creation with Leica, both devices place imaging firmly at the centre, pairing advanced hardware with Leica-tuned colour science and shooting controls. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra pushes technical boundaries with its first 1-inch LOFIC main sensor and high-resolution telephoto system, while the Leitzphone channels Leica’s heritage through a physical Camera Ring and Essential mode designed to recreate the feel of classic Leica cameras.

The camera app integrates thirteen Leica Looks, five Leica bokeh simulations and photo-centric widgets – reflecting Leica’s UI philosophy of clarity, restraint and focus on the image.
The camera ring from the Leica Camera’s Range Finder, takes some getting used to. At first, I kept accidentally adjusting it and wondered why my photo and video settings were changing on their own. Total rookie mistake, I only realised the cause much later.
The old vs the new

We compared the Xiaomi 15 Ultra with the Leica Leitz Phone powered by Xiaomi. The new 17 Ultra and Leitzphone feel slightly wider with a flatter back, which gives you a more secure and comfortable grip in hand.
