Japan Airlines has brought back the 1960s “JAL Original Happi Coat”. The “JAL Original Happi Coat” is adorned with a delicate white and navy blue Japanese motif with the words Kotobuki (best wishes) written in Kanji at the back. The oneworld member airline also announced that it will levy an international fare fuel surcharge for tickets issued between 1 February and 31 March 2017, subject to regulatory approval. The fuel surcharge applies to flights operated by JAL as well as code-share flights operated by other airlines.

JAL sets fuel surcharge levels bimonthly based on the 2-month average price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel. The price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel during the two month period of October and November 2016 averaged US$58.69 per barrel, which accounted for 6,221 yen in the average exchange rate of 106.00 JPY/USD during the same period.

As a result, with reference to the fuel surcharge benchmark list for FY2016 in Japanese yen, this corresponds to zone A of fuel surcharges. From February 1 to March 31, 2017, it will range from 200 yen on a Japan – Korea ticket to 3,500 yen on Japan – USA ticket per person per sector flown, on tickets for travel originating in Japan.

New Level: Zone A Fuel Surcharge

  • Japan to Korea, Far East Russia – 200 Yen
  • Japan to China, Hong Kong or Taiwan – 500 Yen
  • Japan to Guam, Palau, Philippines or Vietnam – 1,000 Yen
  • Japan to Malaysia, Singapore or Thailand – 1,500 Yen
  • Japan to Hawaii, India, Sri Lanka or Indonesia – 2,000 Yen
  • Japan to Canada, Europe, Middle East, Oceania or USA except Hawaii – 3,500 Yen
