“Hak-Gam” Olive Fried Rice with Minced Pork and Prawn

Dishes You Have to Try at Joyden Canton at Shaw House

Joyden Canton

Joyden Canton first opened at HillV2 in Bukit Timah in 2014. It recently opened a new casual dining outlet that serves up hot comfort food on 23 May 2017 at Shaw House. Offering Cantonese fare at the new 140-seats outlet, there are also new dishes that are offered only here.

This is Joyden Concept’s fifth outlet with Joyden Seafood (formerly known as West Coast Seafood) being the first to open at West Coast Recreation Centre in 2013, Joyden Treasures at Kallang Leisure Park in 2014 as well as The Joyden Hall, an event space at Bugis+ in 2011.

Double boiled soups here are absolute favourites for me. For the love of soups, I tried the Black Bean, Black-Eyed Pea and Peanut with Pig Tail Soup (S$8). The soup is boiled together with mandarin peel and longan giving it a slight citrus sweet flavour. This soup has health benefits as it is good for wellness and blood circulation as well as removes heatiness and gets rid of wind. This soup is sufficient for me as a meal because the beans, peas and peanuts are enough for my small appetite. Add a bowl of rice, and voila, there’s a quick lunch. And if you rather share, go for the Foshan Old Coconut Soup with Farm Chicken (S$14) which is served in a coconut and if filled with lots of appetising goodies.

For appetisers, you can enjoy a serving of Daliang Pan-Fried Stuffed Lotus Root (S$9). The Lotus Root is fried with minced pork, shitake mushrooms, water chestnuts and cilantro. Dip it into sweet chilli sauce.

The Almond and Salted Egg Prawns with Lemon Sauce (S$21) is uniquely good. These flavourful balls of tiger prawns, salted egg yolk, cilantro and water chestnuts are deep fried and then covered with almonds on the surface offer a nice crunchy texture with every bite you sink into them.

The Twice-baked Golden Egg Gratin with Caramelised ‘You Tiao’ (S$18) is another must try. This dish features jellyfish, vermicelli, mandarin peel, minced olive and eggs, topped with dough sticks that so good and crispy. All the different textures and flavours of this dish will make you yearn for more.

For something more homey, go for the Steamed Cod Fish with Hua-Diao and Homemade Ginger Sauce (S$32). The Cod Fish is steamed with a silky layer of egg white. The Pan-seared Pork Chops with Home Made Dang Gui Barbeque Sauce (S$19) pair well with white rice. The juicy tender meat topped with fried garlic is cooked to perfection.

The veggies here are no simple dishes too. There are two dishes that I particularly like. The Handmade Seafood Beancurd with Slow Braised Shanghai Baby Cabbage (S$18) features cabbage that almost melts in your mouth.

The poached egg white Braised Luffa Gourd with Poached Egg White in Conpoy Sauce (S$17) is so soft and delicate whether you have a full set of original teeth or dentures. But if you are getting the ‘Moonlight” rice or vermicelli dishes, you would probably want to order the slow braised Shanghai Baby Cabbage so you wouldn’t have an overdose of egg white.

And if you in the mood for some carbohydrates, we tried two dishes and it is a difficult to decide which we liked better. The ‘Moonlight’ Rice Vermicelli with Egg White and Scallop (S$19) or the “Hak Kam” Olive Fried Rice with Minced Pork and Prawn (S$18). You’ll have to try it for yourself. Depending on your appetite, each dish can be shared by two people. Something light before a movie at LIDO.
