Preparations For Changi Airport Terminal Four Kicks Off

Changi Airport Terminal Four Kicks Off

Singapore Changi Airport Terminal Four will be able to operate efficiently and with increased manpower productivity for airlines and airport agencies.

The two-storey, 25-metre high building with a gross floor area of 195,000 square metres will be built on the site where the former Budget Terminal used to be. A 300-metre long Central Galleria separates the public zone from the restricted zone. The terminal will feature openness, greenery and natural lighting.

Changi Airport Terminal Four building will be seven times larger than the former Budget Terminal. It will be home to 17 contact stands for narrow-body aircraft and for wide-body aircraft, all fitted with aerobridges. This terminal is designed for quick turnaround of aircraft with the flexibility to serve both regional full-service and low-cost carriers and will be able to handle 16 million passenger movements annually contributing to the airport’s total annual passenger capacity of 82 million in 2017.

With the roll-out of fast and seamless travel initiatives (FAST), self-service and automated options will be offered at check-in, bag drop, immigration clearance and departure-gate boarding. Passengers will be able to check-in without waiting in queues during peak hours.  Airports such as Charles De Guille in Paris and Sydney airport have already rolled out some of these self-service initiatives.

Immigration and pre-board security screening areas will be centralised at the south end of the terminal so as to create a clear single directional path for passengers towards their boarding gates.

A new walk-through retail concept featuring liquor and tobacco, perfumes and cosmetics will offer departing passengers more shopping convenience prior to boarding their flight. More than 15,000 square metres of space dedicated to shopping and dining.

Changi Airport Terminal Four will have its own Ramp Control Tower to oversee and manage aircraft movements in the apron and taxiways around the terminal. This tower will enhance air traffic controllers’ visual line of sight of aircraft parking stands and associated taxiways near the southern end of Runway Two. The 68-metre tall Ramp Control Tower will give clearance to pilots for push back from the gates as well as give instructions on which taxiway to be used, before handing over communications to Changi Air Traffic Control Tower.

A bridge across Airport Boulevard will be constructed to enable buses and other airside vehicles to move from Terminal Four to the new 17 narrow-body and nine wide-body aircraft stands built at a land plot south of Terminal Three.  Changi Airport Terminal Four will also have a centralised departure bus lounge with up to nine bus bays.

1,500 parking spaces for private vehicles in an open air car park in front of the terminal as well as in a multi-story car park will be available.

Lui Tuck Yew, Singapore’s Minister for Transport graced Changi Airport Terminal Four’s groundbreaking ceremony on 5 November.
