Italian breeze at Capri

The words “spice” and “Italian” don’t quite come to mind at the same time, but at the revamped Capri Trattoria & Pizzeria those two come hand in hand.

Opened in 2011, Capri was taken over in 2014 by a new Milanese owner, Fabrizio Anzolin and executive chef Domenico Truglia. And together they bring monthly regional specials that highlight three dishes from the a la carte menu or all new creations from the chef.

Capri brings a taste of South Italy to Singapore with its fiery spicy flavours and piquant chilli oils.

For the month of June, Capri brings you the Pasta Riccia All’Ndjua (S$25) which features handmade crinkle cut pasta slathered in a spicy pork paste that is made from scratch.

This pork spread is a specialty from Calabria and it is a fine blend of pork, olive oil, garlic, black pepper and chilli flakes. Ricotta cheese is then added to cut through the spice and give the paste a creamy texture.

Other dishes from Calabria include the Tagliere Casereccio (S$28), a charcuterie platter full of house-cured cold cuts like pancetta (pork belly), capocollo (pork neck) and bresaola (air-dried beef). It comes with a light drizzle of olive oil and cured chillis. And boy, those cured green chillis pack quite a punch.

The dishes from the regular a la carte menu feature dishes from locations like western coastal Tuscany and Lombardy in the north. The latter dish is a heartier one with a large and juicy, Cotoletta alla Milanese (S$48) which is a thick-cut take on the veal escalope.

But I absolutely adored the comforting bowl of Cacciucco alla Livornese (S$28), a value-for-money Italian “bouillabaisse” full of shellfish, squid, prawns, crayfish and cod in a tomato-based sauce. I took full delight in soaking the accompanying bread in the sauce.

If you’re still able to eat after all that, dessert comes in the form of a lightly textured but densely flavoured Torta al Limone (S$10), a warm fresh lemon cake with a side of cream. Other desserts like tiramisu and pannacotta are also available on the menu.

End your meal the Italian way with a shot-glass full of limoncello (S$10) to wash it all down.

Molto bene!
