Sake Social Takes Place 1 and 2 July 2023

When: 1 and 2 July 2023

What: The team behind Sake Matsuri Singapore presents Sake Social, an exclusive 2-day sake odyssey that aims to increase the appreciation of sake in Singapore with a showcase of rare and uncommon sake made with both traditional and new-age methods. Sake Social is challenging the norms of what sake is by introducing a broad spectrum of the alcoholic beverage that differs from the common Junmai sake, ranging from unpasteurised (namazake) and unfiltered (muroka) sake to natural (shizenshu) and aged sake (koshu). The best Sake sommeliers from Singapore and the region will be present at the event to share their expertise. Tickets are priced at $128 per session per person or $228 for 2-session pass (entry to 1 session each on Days 1 and 2), inclusive of 3 hours of sake tasting and a limited edition merchandise pack. Only 100 tickets are available per session, which can be purchased from www.sakesocial.sg from 10 June 2023.

Day 1 of Sake Social will focus on aged and new sake. While new sake typically refers to sake brewed with rice harvested in the same year, aged sake or koshucan refer to sake that is aged for 3 years or more and even carry a lustreless brown colour.

Day 2 will introduce raw and unfiltered sake, defined as sake that has skipped pasteurisation or filtration respectively. While nigori or cloudy sake (coarsely filtered sake) is available in small volumes in Singapore, the rustic doburoku — which is completely unfiltered and requires specialised licences to brew in Japan — is less common and expected to surprise palates at Sake Social. With less rigid rules surrounding its ingredient mix, brewers have leeway for more creativity when brewing doburoku, yielding varied flavours that can be sweet or sour in flavour, and even lumpy or gritty in texture.
