Singapore GP Designer Cocktail and Mocktail at Singapore’s Formula One night race.

9 September, 2010, Singapore – 5 cocktails and 3 mocktails were shortlisted for the Designer Cocktail Contest organised by the Singapore Grand Prix.  This year, I understand, Singapore GP has organized the designer cocktail contest, so that, there would be a local element to the concoction of the Singapore cocktail and mocktail that would be served at this year’s Formula One night race in Singapore.

Voting Card

I was present at the judging and voting session held at New Asia Bar where I got to try all the cocktails and mocktails.  I had my favourites. In the Mocktails category,  I voted for the Singapore Slipstream which was a concoction of Lemongrass Syrup, Calamansi Juice, Lemon Juice, Lime Juice, Simple Syrup and Sparkling Mineral Water.  I liked the lemongrass which made this mocktail refreshing.  This ingredient always does the trick for me.

In the Cocktails category, my personal favourite was the Jumpstart.  Jumpstart is a concoction created with Johnnie Walker Black Label, Vanilla Syrup, Pineapple Juice, Lime Juice, Mumm Champagne and soda.

The 3 Mocktails shortlisted are:

Pit Stop
Red Dot
Singapore Slipstream (The Winning Mocktail)

The 5 shortlisted Cocktails

Starry Race
Vancas
Passionate Victory
Champagne Chicane
Jumpstart - The Winning Cocktail

The winning low-alcohol cocktail was created by Jobin Joseph, a barman at the Mandarin Oriental. His cocktail – Jumpstart – is a blend of Johnnie Walker whisky, Mumm Champagne, pineapple and lime juice, and garnished with a basil leaf.

The non-alcoholic category was won by Jimmy Lim, Assistant Bar Manager, Long Bar, Raffles Hotel, with his recipe for Singapore Slipstream. The lemon-green beverage is a mix of lemongrass syrup, calamansi, lemon and lime juice, and garnished with a fold of lemongrass.

The competition featured a total of 8 finalist drinks and was judged by of a panel of Food & Beverage experts from Singapore GP, Association of Bartenders and Sommeliers Singapore and key industry partners. The judges spent nearly two hours watching the finalists at work, and sampling every drink. Finalists were judged on the presentation of their cocktail, visual appeal, aroma, taste, as well as creative utilisation of ingredients and garnishes.

Both Jumpstart and Singapore Slipstream will be served to the estimated 10,500 guests each day at the exclusive Paddock Club and corporate hospitality suites. The winning participants have each won a pair of three-day passes to the Green Room at the 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX worth over SGD$7,000.
