WhatsApp is rolling out four new features designed to make the messaging app more useful beyond the smartphone. The July 2026 update includes direct account registration on iPad, redesigned CarPlay and Android Auto experiences, improved PDF tools and easier music sharing to WhatsApp Status.
The updates reflect how people increasingly move between different screens throughout the day. Instead of treating WhatsApp primarily as a phone app, the latest features allow users to stay connected from a tablet, computer or car display, while also integrating more closely with services such as Adobe Acrobat, Apple Music and Spotify.
Create a WhatsApp Account Directly on iPad
WhatsApp launched its dedicated iPad app in 2025, but users previously had to connect it to an account created on another device. The latest update allows new users to register and set up a WhatsApp account directly through the iPad app, without first linking it to a phone.
This should be particularly useful for people who use an iPad as their main personal or work device, as well as households that want a separate WhatsApp account on a shared tablet.
Redesigned WhatsApp for CarPlay and Android Auto
WhatsApp has also refreshed its in-car experience for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Drivers can listen and respond to messages, make WhatsApp calls, view recent call history and access favourite contacts through the vehicle’s display. The functions are designed to work hands-free while driving.
The redesigned interface makes commonly used communication tools easier to reach, although drivers should continue to keep their attention on the road and rely on voice controls whenever possible.
Open and Edit PDFs Inside WhatsApp
PDF documents can now be opened directly within WhatsApp on web and desktop, removing the need to download a file before viewing it. Adobe Acrobat powers the new document tools, which include basic editing functions such as highlighting and annotation.
This could make WhatsApp more convenient for quick document reviews, particularly when colleagues or friends need to mark up an itinerary, proposal, form or presentation without leaving the conversation.
Share Music to WhatsApp Status
WhatsApp users can now share songs directly from Apple Music and Spotify to their Status. The feature adds the track to a Status update in a few taps, giving users another way to show friends what they are listening to.
Meta says the four features have started rolling out. Availability may therefore differ depending on device, operating system, app version and market.
