Visiting Uluṟu in 2026? Field of Light’s 10th anniversary adds new reasons to go after dark

If you have ever seen photos of Uluṟu surrounded by a glittering sea of colour, chances are it was Bruce Munro’s Field of Light, one of the world’s most recognisable large-scale light installations. In 2026, the artwork marks its 10th anniversary, and Ayers Rock Resort is marking the milestone with new guest experiences, fresh dining updates, and cultural collaborations across Australia.

What is Field of Light, and why people keep flying in for it

Field of Light first opened in 2016 as a temporary installation, but it stuck around and has since welcomed more than 750,000 visitors, becoming Munro’s longest-running artwork.

Set in the desert near Uluṟu, it covers about seven football fields and features 50,000 solar-powered stems, inspired by native wildflowers after rain. The installation is situated on Aṉangu Country, a place of continuing cultural significance stretching back tens of thousands of years.

Its influence has travelled too, with the Uluṟu work credited as inspiration for later Munro installations in places including Sensorio (California)Longwood Gardens (Pennsylvania)Freedom Plaza (Manhattan), and Salcombe (UK), but Uluṟu remains the original.

What’s happening for the 10-year celebrations

Ayers Rock Resort says the anniversary will be marked with a programme that includes:

  • A new mural in Melbourne (on Wurundjeri Country), co-created by Aṉangu artist Valerie Brumby and Wurundjeri muralist Alex Kerr.
  • VIP Evenings with Bruce Munro at Field of Light.
  • Complimentary Q&A sessions at the Resort.
  • Refreshed menus for Field of Light dining experiences, featuring native and Indigenous ingredients from First Nations-owned Cooee Native Ingredients Australia.

Munro describes Uluṟu as the “spiritual home” of the artwork, while Brumby says painting the sunset over Field of Light makes her feel “happy and proud”, and that the mural will help show how beautiful it is.

More reasons to stay after dark at Uluṟu

The anniversary year also spotlights Ayers Rock Resort’s growing line-up of immersive experiences, including:

  • Wintjiri Wiṟu, a drone and light experience created in partnership with Aṉangu, sharing a chapter of an ancient creation story.
  • Sunrise Journeys, a female-led laser and light experience co-created by three Aṉangu women artists.
