Explore Bhutan with Ease: Visa Simplified, Sustainable Development Fee Reduced to US$100, and More Flight Options Available

Bhutan is now more accessible to travellers by simplifying the visa process, reducing the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) to US$100, and increased flight options.

Bhutan Visa Application – Apply Online at US$40

All visitors require a visa before arrival to enter Bhutan and may apply for a visa online. These are typically processed within five working days. Visas are valid for up to 90 days. Visitors from India can obtain a permit online or on arrival, while visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives can get a visa on arrival.

The application involves paying a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) and a US$40 visa fee. Applicants can apply online, through a tour operator, or via a hotel. There is no cap on visitor numbers to Bhutan.

Bhutan Sustainable Development Fee – Reduced to US$100

In 2023, Bhutan reduced the Sustainable Development Fund by 50% until 31 August 2027 with incentives for children. The new rates of US$100 per adult per night and children between the ages of six and who have not yet turned 12 pay a reduced rate of US$50 per night. Those under six years old do not have to pay any SDF fee.

The Sustainable Development fee is a daily contribution by tourists towards the nation’s development, aiding various sectors, including healthcare, education, environment, culture and economy, fostering long-term sustainable opportunities for its citizens. Bhutan leverages the SDF to uphold its forest cover and carbon neutrality as a carbon-neutral country.

Increased Air connectivity to Bhutan

Drukair and Bhutan Airlines have expanded their flights, providing increased accessibility to the kingdom with non-stop/transit flights connecting India, Singapore, Thailand, Nepal and Bangladesh to Paro International Airport.

Bhutan Airlines will also start flights to Paro from Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Bhutan has signed an Air Service Agreement with the Government of the State of Kuwait.
